Diffusion Welding

Diffusion welding, often referred to as diffusion bonding, is a solid-state joining method that fuses materials without melting or forming a liquid phase.

The process applies controlled heat and pressure for a specific duration, promoting atomic-level movement across the interface. While formally developed in the 1970s as a high-end joining method, its foundation lies in techniques once used by ancient goldsmiths.

This technique is highly effective for joining metals that are reactive or difficult to weld, such as titanium, zirconium, beryllium, and various metal-matrix composites. Its ability to form strong joints with little to no distortion makes it ideal for aerospace, electronics, and nuclear applications.

About Eigen

Diffusion Welding at Eigen

Eigen delivers precise diffusion welding services suited for a variety of industrial needs.

Our diffusion welding process features advanced monitoring to prevent voids, ensure consistent bonding conditions, and maintain metallurgical integrity throughout. We guarantee:

  • High-strength joints with minimal flaws

  • Accurate welding of high-performance and dissimilar materials

  • Improved thermal and electrical flow for specialised uses

Through modern equipment and automation, Eigen offers reliable and cost-efficient diffusion welding on a global scale.

Advantages of Diffusion Welding

  • Superior Joint Strength: Produces bonds nearly equal to the strength of the base material.

  • Minimal Distortion: As no melting occurs, parts retain their original dimensions and surface finish.

  • Clean, Defect-Free Joints: No filler metals or fluxes are required, resulting in contamination-free welds.

  • Excellent for Dissimilar Materials: Allows joining of metals, ceramics, and composites that are difficult to weld by traditional means.

Types of Diffusion Welding Processes

Our diffusion welding process features:

Conventional Diffusion Welding

The standard method using controlled temperature and pressure for bonding.

Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP)

Applies high pressure uniformly in all directions using an inert gas medium — ideal for dense and complex shapes.

Vacuum Diffusion Welding

Conducted in a vacuum chamber to prevent oxidation and contamination of reactive materials.

Transient Liquid Phase (TLP) Bonding

Involves an interlayer that temporarily melts and then solidifies to form a strong metallurgical bond.

Solid-State Diffusion Bonding

Performed entirely in the solid phase, commonly used for joining refractory and high-melting-point materials.
